Erik Hamon: Real Estate, Community, and the Courage to Care
For Erik Hamon, a real estate broker at Groupe Sutton - Centre - Ouest inc. in Montreal, real estate is about more than just
transactions. After 18 years in the business, he remains driven to help first-time buyers, especially young families, find the right home. His dedication to people goes well beyond closing deals.
Erik’s recent nomination for the REALTORS Care® Award demonstrates his ongoing commitment to real estate, built on service, integrity, and genuine community involvement.
“I believe everyone should give a bit of their time to their community,” Erik says.
A Career Guided by Integrity and Diligence
Asked what values guide both his professional and personal life, Erik answers with humility and humour: integrity, diligence, and a sense of humour.
These values influence how he works with clients, talks about neighbourhoods, and handles the responsibilities of being a real estate professional.
For Erik, being a broker means seeing both the market value and the human value: respecting residents, supporting local organizations, and helping communities care for their most vulnerable members.
A REALTOR'S Care® Nomination Rooted in Teamwork
While Erik is grateful for the recognition, he is quick to point out that community work is never done alone.
“Whether it’s for the SPCA, Doris, or Projet Genèse, I always work as part of a team,” he explains. “My recognition as a volunteer would be impossible without the efforts of the other volunteers I collaborate with, as well as the staff of these organizations.”
That collaborative spirit shapes Erik’s outlook. His nomination reflects the work of organizations, volunteers, and members who strive to create safer, supportive environments.
Standing Up for Housing Dignity with Projet Genèse
One of Erik’s most important commitments is with Projet Genèse, a community group in Côte-des-Neiges that helps residents with housing, income, and access to services.
Côte-des-Neiges is home to many newcomers, and Erik was moved by the reality that some tenants may not know their rights. His involvement with Projet Genèse is, in his words, a way of standing up to unfairness.
“I strive to be as honest and transparent as possible, especially when it comes to properties with tenants,” Erik says. “I won’t
hesitate to inform tenants of their rights, as well as remind landlords of their obligations toward them.”
This view shapes how he handles income properties. He respects tenants’ time during visits and believes real estate
professionals should understand the people affected by a sale.
Beyond Market Value: The Real Value of a Community
When discussing what makes a community valuable, Erik thinks real estate professionals should look beyond amenities,
location, and market trends.
“I think it all comes down to how a community treats its most vulnerable members,” he says. “Communities and cities that make an effort to help those in need are places where people want to live.”
For Erik, a broker is more than just someone in the market. A broker can help bring a community together and make a real
difference in its well-being.
But that work needs to be real and sincere. “It has to go beyond a simple marketing campaign,” he says. “It has to be authentic.”
Supporting Causes Close to Home
Erik volunteers for many causes, including housing rights, poverty, animal welfare, helping vulnerable families, and supporting children’s health.
For over 15 years, Erik has worked with the Montreal SPCA, organizing supporters for the St. Patrick’s Day parade to raise
awareness about animal advocacy.
At the Montreal Children’s Hospital, Erik has organized superhero visits, bringing joy to young patients with the help of friends from Montreal Comiccon.
Through Chez Doris, Erik has seen how simple, practical gestures can make a real difference for women in tough situations.
“Even the smallest gestures can make a difference,” he says. “Donating boots and a warm coat can truly help someone get
through the coldest months.”
A Challenge to the Real Estate Community
If Erik could give one challenge to real estate professionals across Canada, it would be this: pick a cause that matters to you
and give your time to it.
It doesn’t have to be part of a campaign or be public. It just needs to be sincere.
“I encourage my colleagues to dedicate time to a cause they care about,” Erik says. “Do it simply for yourself.”
For Sutton, Erik Hamon’s story reminds us that strong communities are built not just with homes, but with care, responsibility, and people who are willing to help.
